What is the Reading Time Calculator?

A reading time calculator estimates how many minutes a text takes to read by dividing its word count by a reading speed: reading time = words ÷ words per minute. AnyShift defaults to 238 wpm, the average silent reading speed of adults for non-fiction, so a 1,000-word article takes about 4 minutes 12 seconds.

It also gives speaking time for speeches, podcasts and video scripts (150 wpm conversational by default) and a rounded “X min read” label calculated at 265 wpm, the speed Medium uses. Each Markdown or HTML image in the text adds 12 seconds of reading time. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use the Reading Time Calculator

  1. Choose a Reading speed: slow (200 wpm), average adult (238), fast (300) or skimming (450).
  2. Choose a Speaking speed: presentation pace (130 wpm), conversational (150), podcast / audiobook (160) or fast speaker (180).
  3. Paste your article, essay or script into the text box — results update automatically.
  4. Read the Words, Reading time, Speaking time and Medium-style label cards.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a 5-minute speech?
About 650–750 words: 650 at a measured presentation pace of 130 wpm and 750 at a conversational 150 wpm. Allow extra time for pauses, slides and audience reactions.
How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
About 4 minutes at the average adult speed of 238 words per minute, 5 minutes at 200 wpm and 3 minutes 20 seconds at 300 wpm. Read aloud at 150 wpm, it takes about 6 minutes 40 seconds.
What is the average reading speed?
A 2019 meta-analysis by Marc Brysbaert, covering 190 studies, put adult silent reading at about 238 wpm for non-fiction and 260 wpm for fiction. Reading aloud averages about 183 wpm.
How does Medium calculate read time?
Medium bases its label on an average reading speed of 265 words per minute, plus a few seconds per image. The Medium-style label here rounds words ÷ 265 up to the next whole minute, without adding time for images.
Do images change the reading time?
Yes. Each Markdown image or HTML img tag in your text adds 12 seconds to the reading time, because readers pause to look at visuals. Plain-text descriptions of images are counted as normal words.
